Objectives

CAEMIS Project made possible the construction of a software (LMS-U1) product-service that provides an integrated system for the environmental management of a company. It is based on an eight-module architecture for the customer and a central server that acts as a relational database. The result of the application can be reflected by means of fulfilment of legislative requirements, the reduction of environmental and economic costs in the company, a decrease in risk factors concerning the workers health and the environment, and an improvement in the planning strategies for the environmental management. The project has a coordinator (the Austrian company LMS), three technological intermediaries (RENDAN, in Denmark; University of Cork, in Ireland and Randa Group, Spain), and three final industrial users (the Danish railroad company, DSB; the Irish dairy company, Dairygold; and the Spanish pharmaceutical company, J.Uriach Laboratorios). As well, Dr. Ruth Hillary from Imperial College of London and Dr. Manfred Marsmann of Bayer are acting as the expert supervisors of the project.

Objectives

The main objective of this project is to extend the dissemination of the CAEMIS project to all interested parties (industry, administration, etc) in EU member states, informing by means of diverse diffusion tools such as web sites, demonstration CD-ROMs, brochures and seminars.

The web site allows updated data about the project and LMS-U1 software to be accessed by a world-wide audience. Futhermore, the web page contains links with direct access to the web sites of the CAEMIS / CAEMIS-NETS partnership members, final industrial users, pages about EMAS and ISO 14001, and others.

The CD-ROM is based on multimedia technology and contains, among other things, images and brief video-clips about the software applications by industrial users.

Brochures containing text and photos regarding the web site and CD-ROM, as well as descriptions of the partners and a summary of CAEMIS project have been published. Partners participated together with environmental management systems experts and representatives of the organising country authorities and of the European Commission in diffusion seminars.

Objectives

The aim of the project was to study sustainability initiatives undertaken within the tourism industry, and to compare these initiatives to existing policy tools to provide policy-makers and industry practitioners with suggestions for new models for enhancing sustainable development within tourism.

Other objectives of the project included:

developing scientific bases for the environmental management of tourism networks: development of environmental strategies, programmes, etc.
identifying the main policy, economic, institutional and methodological barriers to integration of sustainability considerations into tourism and to propose practical measures to reduce these barriers; and
developing alternative views of sustainable development and instructions for transition towards sustainability within the area of tourism.

The project was structured into several phases: development of common guidelines; data collection in relation to studied networks data analysis (by means of the software for qualitative analysis NUD*IST); and evaluation and publication of results (through information, guides, conferences, etc).
